US Pastor Sentenced to Life for Child Abuse; Wife Convicted of Facilitating Crime

In a significant legal development, a 35-year-old American pastor, Benjamin Garlick, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. This sentence follows his conviction for the sexual assault of a five-year-old girl in Rutherford County, Tennessee. The local court found Garlick guilty of seven counts of aggravated rape of a child, six counts of aggravated sexual battery, and solicitation of sexual exploitation of a minor, after a two-week trial presided over by Judge Barry Tidwell.

In addition to Garlick’s conviction, his 32-year-old wife, Shaantal Garlick, was also found guilty of two counts of facilitating the aggravated rape of a child and two counts of aggravated child neglect. Sentencing for both Benjamin and Shaantal Garlick is scheduled for November 10, 2026.

The investigation into these crimes began in August 2023, following reports of child abuse. Police work led to the identification of two additional victims and evidence that Shaantal Garlick knowingly assisted in the abuse and neglected the child. Prior to his arrest in September 2023, Benjamin Garlick served as an itinerant minister, primarily working with Spanish-speaking communities across the United States.

In the aftermath of the verdict, law enforcement has called on any additional victims or witnesses in the community to come forward and report related incidents to the authorities. This case serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of accountability and justice, aligning with the biblical call to seek justice and care for the vulnerable, as reflected in Micah 6:8 and Proverbs 31:8-9. The community is urged to support peace and neighbor-love, ensuring that such grievous acts are met with the full measure of justice while offering care and support to the victims.
