Protesters Disrupt Rotterdam Holocaust Memorial During Israeli Ambassador’s Speech

In a poignant display of protest, Rotterdam’s annual Holocaust memorial ceremony was disrupted by demonstrators, temporarily halting the event. The protest took place during a speech by Israel’s ambassador to the Netherlands, Zvi Aviner Vapni, at the memorial honoring Jewish residents deported during World War II. The disruption was multifaceted, with a small group of vocal protesters chanting slogans and a larger contingent from the Rotterdam Palestine Coalition organizing a silent protest. Some attendees showed their dissent by turning their backs on the ambassador as he spoke. After the protesters were removed, the ceremony resumed.

The decision to invite the Israeli ambassador to the commemoration was met with criticism from various Rotterdam council factions, municipal employees, and civil society organizations. These groups cited Israel’s actions in the ongoing conflict in Gaza as a reason for their opposition. This marked a departure from previous years, as the ambassador had attended all prior editions of the memorial.

Prior to the ceremony, Dutch police had to intervene to remove demonstrators from the vicinity. Approximately ten individuals with anti-Israel signs were relocated to a designated protest area about 150 meters from the monument.

The political pushback against the ambassador’s presence was spearheaded by municipal council parties DENK and the Partij voor de Dieren (PvdD), as reported by The Rights Forum. This opposition led to a fracturing of local representation at the event. Traditionally, a wreath is laid on behalf of all the city’s neighborhood and village councils. However, this year, several local councils chose to boycott the event. Notably, the council of Bloemhof, where the monument is located, unanimously voted to boycott, and the neighborhood councils of Hillesluis and Oosterflank also withdrew their participation.

Adding to the internal dissent, an official letter signed by Rotterdam municipal employees was sent to Rotterdam Mayor Carola Schouten, urging her to reconsider the ambassador’s invitation.
