Rev. Don LeClere, pastor of the Marshall Evangelical Free Church, is set to retire later this month after more than 40 years of service. His tenure has been marked by a deep connection to the congregation and a commitment to ministry.

LeClere grew up on a farm near Coggon, Iowa, where he first encountered faith. Initially planning to become a farmer, his life path shifted after attending the Explo 72 youth ministry event in Dallas. This experience led him to pursue ministry, and he eventually enrolled at Northwestern College in St. Paul before attending the Evangelical Free Church seminary in Deerfield, Illinois.

In 1983, LeClere and his wife Sandy arrived in Marshall, Minnesota, where they were invited to serve as associate pastors. He was appointed senior pastor in 1985 and was ordained in 1987. The Evangelical Free Church of America required three years of licensed practical ministry before ordination, a policy that LeClere adhered to.

The Marshall community resonated with LeClere, who described it as feeling like “going home” due to its similarities with his rural upbringing. He praised the active involvement of laypeople, who have supported the church’s ministries over the years.

During his time at the church, its outreach has expanded significantly. One notable development was the establishment of ministries on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University. After years of effort, the church now oversees three campus ministries: Bridges for international students, Converge for traditional college students, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for student athletes.

Mission trips have also been a cornerstone of the church’s ministry. Over the past four decades, more than 70 short-term mission trips have taken place, reflecting the congregation’s dedication to service and outreach.
