In a recent development, the Jewish Council of Australia (JCA), a fringe left-wing group, has initiated a campaign to push for parliamentary sanctions against Israel. The campaign, known as the Red Lines Package, aims to prevent Australia from funding, arming, or investing in what the initiative describes as illegal settlements, war crimes, or genocide. This effort is supported by the Australian Palestine Advocacy Network and other groups that have organized pro-Hamas marches following the events of October 7.
The initiative is based on a misinterpretation of the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) ruling. The architects of the legislation claim that the ICJ found a plausible case of genocide committed by Israel in Gaza. However, the ICJ’s order from January 26, 2024, actually found that Palestinians in Gaza had the right to be protected from genocide, not that Israel committed genocide. The then-president of the ICJ, Joan Donoghue, clarified that the court did not decide on the plausibility of the genocide claim.
Chris Sidoti, an Australian lawyer involved in a United Nations commission of inquiry that accused Israel of genocide, is also supporting the initiative. Sidoti has previously been noted for his critical stance on Israel, describing it as a “settler colonial apartheid state.” He has been criticized for his views on antisemitism, including a statement made in 2022 where he suggested that Jews frequently misuse accusations of antisemitism.
The JCA, established in February 2024, represents a small segment of the Australian Jewish community, claiming about 2,500 supporters within a larger community of over 100,000. The group has been active in lobbying against the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism in Australian public institutions and healthcare. Additionally, JCA leaders and members have participated in rallies since October 7, aligning with pro-Palestine groups in their efforts.
