Baptist Pastor Cameron Giovanelli Faces Sexual Abuse Allegations from Former Teen Aide
Sarah Jackson came forward in May 2018 with allegations that her former pastor, Cameron Giovanelli, had sexually abused her when she was a minor. She claimed the abuse began around 2007, when she was 17 years old and he was 29. Jackson described the experience as deeply traumatic, noting the emotional and psychological toll it took on her. Her decision to speak out came after more than a decade of silence, following the birth of her first child.
Jackson was a teenager in Dundalk, Maryland, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where Giovanelli had served as a pastor since 2004. She described her upbringing as “sheltered,” with limited exposure to comprehensive sex education. According to her claims, Giovanelli began grooming her in 2006. He was also a teacher at the church school she attended and had hired her to babysit his children. On January 3, 2007, he called her into his study, where he allegedly kissed her. She later said he had pulled her out of an English class taught by his wife and kissed her.
Jackson alleged that Giovanelli, who was married and a father of two, used his position of authority to coerce her. In the months that followed, he reportedly sent her texts using the word “Jan,” and she would reply “3rd” if she was alone, signaling they could communicate freely. The situation escalated, with prosecutors claiming Giovanelli allegedly sexually abused her at her grandparents’ house over several months. Jackson said she found it difficult to sit in the pews and listen to his sermons on the sanctity of marriage and relationships, knowing what was happening behind closed doors.
Another church leader allegedly discovered the abuse later in 2007 and intervened. Giovanelli reportedly offered to resign, but the offer was allegedly declined. Jackson said their communication subsequently slowed, and she was allegedly told not to disclose the matter to anyone because it would damage both their “reputations.” She has spoken about the psychological and emotional toll the experience took on her. It was only in 2018, after the birth of her first child, that she decided to speak out.
On May 11, 2018, Jackson shared a post on social media, marking the beginning of her public testimony. The case has been featured in the TV series “Toxic,” particularly the episode “The Chosen One,” which traces the timeline of events leading to Giovanelli’s eventual accountability. The story highlights the complexities of abuse within religious communities and the courage required to come forward. As Micah 6:8 reminds us, we are called to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.
