Baptist Union Leader Publishes Memoir Detailing Global Travels and Ministry
Rev David Coffey, a prominent figure in the Baptist Union of Great Britain, has released his memoir *Around the World in 80 Ways*, detailing his global travels and spiritual journey. Coffey, who served as a senior pastor at Upton Vale Baptist Church in Torquay, has dedicated much of his life to Christian ministry and leadership within the Baptist community. His book offers a personal account of his experiences across the world, highlighting encounters with diverse people and the enduring nature of his faith.
Coffey arrived in Torquay in September 1980 and played a significant role in the life of Upton Vale Baptist Church and the broader community. His commitment to Christian service led to his appointment as Director of Evangelism for the Baptist Union of Great Britain in 1988. Three years later, he became the Union’s General Secretary, a position he held for 15 years and which brought him international recognition.
During his tenure, Coffey’s influence extended globally. He was elected President of the Baptist World Alliance in 2005, a position that involved traveling to over 80 countries to teach the Bible and mentor emerging leaders. The Baptist World Alliance, representing 52 million Baptists across 128 countries, provided a platform for Coffey to engage with global Christian communities and advocate for religious freedom.
Coffey has been a vocal advocate for preserving religious liberty, leading human rights delegations to countries such as Vietnam, China, and the former Soviet Union. His efforts reflect a commitment to justice and the protection of religious freedoms, themes that align with Micah 6:8, which calls for justice, mercy, and humble service.
Upon retiring in 2010, Coffey and his wife Janet returned to Torbay, where they now reside in Marldon. Despite his retirement, Coffey remains active in preaching and speaking at conferences throughout Devon and beyond. Recently, he addressed audiences in Huddersfield and Oxford, continuing his ministry and sharing his insights with others.
*Around the World in 80 Ways* is available for purchase from Waterstones and Amazon, priced at £11.99. The book serves as a testament to Coffey’s lifelong dedication to Christian service, global outreach, and the Baptist tradition.
