Bellevue Baptist Church fires minister after investigation of sex abuse allegations
Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tennessee, has terminated the employment of Paul Williams, its minister of prayer and special projects, following an internal investigation into allegations of misconduct. Williams, who had served the 25,000-member church for 34 years, was placed on paid leave in December after Pastor Steve Gaines announced the church was investigating a “moral failure.” Gaines stated that Williams had confessed misconduct to him six months prior.
The details of the alleged misconduct, which reportedly involve sodomy with a minor from 17 years ago, have not been disclosed publicly. However, several partisan websites have claimed the abuse involved a family member. The church has not released specific information about the case, maintaining a level of confidentiality around the matter.
Pastor Gaines has faced criticism for the delay in addressing the situation. Michael Spradlin, president of Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, which is located near Bellevue Baptist, suggested that a minister who knew of child molesting and took no action should resign. Similarly, Michael Reagan, a conservative radio host, called for accountability of pastors who fail to report abuse allegations.
In a letter to the congregation, Gaines acknowledged his decision to keep the matter private and expressed regret for not involving church leadership sooner. “I realize now that I should have discussed it further with this minister and brought this to the attention of our church leadership immediately,” he wrote.
The firing of Williams was approved by a personnel committee vote. A spokesperson for the committee will provide an update on the investigation following evening services on January 28. Williams has not been formally charged with any criminal activity. The church has stated it is in contact with the Department of Child Services through legal counsel and is committed to cooperating with the agency.
Bellevue Baptist Church continues to navigate the fallout from this incident, which has raised questions about accountability and transparency within the congregation. The church’s response reflects a commitment to addressing the allegations while adhering to legal and ethical standards.
