Camp Timber-lee, a faith-based outdoor camp in southeast Wisconsin, will remain open after a Wisconsin businessman agreed to purchase it from Trinity International University (TIU). The evangelical university had previously announced the camp’s closure as part of a financial restructuring due to declining enrollment and economic challenges.

TIU acquired Camp Timber-lee in 2016 from the Evangelical Free Church of America and has operated it since. On Thursday, both the camp and TIU confirmed that a buyer had been found. The camp expressed gratitude for the new owner, describing him as a “fellow believer in Christ” who prioritizes the ministry over personal recognition.

The buyer, Gregg Kunes, owner of Kunes Auto Group in Delavan, Wisconsin, is a longtime supporter of the camp. Kunes, who has been in Walworth County since 1996, said he felt compelled to act after hearing from the Holy Spirit that the camp’s closure could not happen. His business has grown to include 29 auto dealerships and 13 RV facilities across multiple states.

Through the Kunes Family Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization since 2017, Kunes donates 10 percent of gross profits—over $5 million annually—to charities, primarily through grants. The foundation is dedicated to supporting the underprivileged, with Kunes listed as a trustee receiving no compensation.

Founded in 1947, Camp Timber-lee has served as a Christian summer youth camp for generations. Kunes affirmed the camp’s faith-based mission, emphasizing the role of Christian camping in helping children come to faith. “I’ve seen it in my own family and through story after story from friends and colleagues,” he said.

Supporters of the camp, which had been scheduled to close on March 5, expressed relief and joy at the news. One supporter wrote, “My Daughter has great memories of camp, and her Son, my Grandson, went for his first time last summer and loved it!”

The agreement ensures the continuation of Camp Timber-lee’s ministry, aligning with the biblical call to care for the next generation and provide opportunities for spiritual growth. As Micah 6:8 reminds us, we are to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.
