Charismatic churches in Ukraine reach 3 million people through food distribution and evangelization during war, according to interchurch council head
Andriy Tyshchenko, head of the Ukrainian Interchurch Council (UMR) and senior bishop of the Charismatic Evangelical Church of Ukraine, highlighted the growing influence of charismatic churches in Ukraine during the ongoing war. He noted that there are currently 1,300 evangelical charismatic churches in the country, reaching approximately 3 million citizens through their activities. Tyshchenko made these remarks at a press conference titled “The Role of Evangelical Churches in Strengthening Ukraine’s Resilience,” held by Interfax-Ukraine.
According to Tyshchenko, these churches have intensified their efforts since Russia’s full-scale invasion. They engage in various initiatives, including food distribution and evangelization. He mentioned that his church alone has led 300,000 people to repentance during the war, emphasizing the spiritual and practical support provided by the community.
Tyshchenko emphasized the importance of cooperation between religious denominations and the government. He stated that the UMR is committed to productive dialogue and collaboration with all religious groups and authorities, noting that they are not only Christians but also active citizens contributing to public life.
Ruslan Kukharchuk, deputy head of the UMR and head of the “All Together!” Christian civic movement, added that Ukraine has three major interdenominational associations. These include the UMR, which unites newer evangelical Protestant churches, the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (VRTsiRO), and the Council of Evangelical Protestant. This highlights the diverse religious landscape in Ukraine and the role of interfaith cooperation in addressing national challenges.
The expansion of charismatic churches’ influence during the war reflects their active participation in both spiritual and humanitarian efforts. Their engagement with the community underscores the importance of faith-based initiatives in supporting national resilience. As the war continues, the role of these churches in providing aid and spiritual guidance remains significant.
