Detroit Archbishop Outlines New Measures to Strengthen Clergy Abuse Protections
Detroit Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger released a pastoral message on March 11 titled “Rebuilding Trust: A Pastoral Message on Abuse, Reform, and Hope.” In the message, he expressed “heartfelt sorrow for the evil of abuse and the profound suffering it has caused.” The document was released ahead of his first anniversary as the archbishop of Detroit.
Weisenburger acknowledged the pain caused by clergy sexual abuse and emphasized the Church’s ongoing commitment to accountability, transparency, and the protection of vulnerable individuals. He stated that the message and new policies are part of recommitting the Church to the “central and enduring priority” of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.
The archbishop noted that among his key responsibilities was addressing the wounds caused by clergy sexual abuse and strengthening the Church’s commitment to accountability and protection. He reiterated his dedication to ensuring the protection of children and vulnerable adults remains a central focus of his pastoral leadership.
Weisenburger offered his “most sincere and heartfelt apology” to those who have been abused or harmed by Church pastors. He acknowledged that “words alone cannot heal the harm inflicted” and referenced Jesus’ teaching that whatever we do to the least among us, we do to Him. He described the crimes and misconduct suffered by victims as an “attack on Christ Himself” and prayed for their healing and comfort through the grace and love of Jesus.
In the message, Weisenburger called for the local Church to renew its commitment to healing, safeguarding, and accountability. He outlined several new measures to strengthen the protection of children and vulnerable adults, accompany abuse victims, educate future clergy, and more closely monitor clergy who have been removed from ministry.
Since the adoption of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People” in 2002, the Archdiocese of Detroit has “worked diligently to bring criminals to justice” through strict protocols and ongoing reforms. The archbishop’s message reflects a continued effort to uphold the dignity and safety of all individuals, particularly the most vulnerable.
