Recent grants to DuPagePads support emergency shelter for homeless individuals in DuPage County
David, a Chicago native, shared his struggle to survive the harsh winter, relying on plasma donations for income to afford gas. One night, the cold proved too much, and he sought shelter at DuPagePads, a Wheaton-based nonprofit. Within days, he found a place to stay, highlighting the critical role of emergency shelter during extreme weather.
DuPagePads has been providing emergency shelter to those in need across DuPage County this winter. As of Friday, the program, which began in mid-December, had helped 124 individuals who might otherwise have had no place to sleep. April Redzic, the organization’s president and CEO, emphasized the daily reality of people relying on such services to survive the cold.
The nonprofit operates an Interim Housing Center in Downers Grove, offering shelter, food, and case management to about 300 people per night. However, the shelter reached capacity, and the waiting list expanded to three times its usual length. To address the growing demand, the DuPagePads Board of Directors increased its budget from $50,000 to $150,000 to secure more beds.
DuPage County recognized the urgent need and allocated $200,000 from its affordable housing fund to DuPagePads. The DuPage Foundation also contributed $190,000. County Board Chair Deb Conroy noted that housing and food insecurity are present in every community, underscoring the local impact of the issue.
The additional funding enabled DuPagePads to secure up to 70 hotel rooms for emergency shelter, an approach the nonprofit adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic. This model, which involved contracting hotel rooms, became permanent in March 2022. The organization has been working to end homelessness since its founding in 1985, initially relying on church partners for shelter. The shift to hotel-based housing reflects the evolving challenges of providing safe, temporary shelter.
Micah 6:8 calls for justice, mercy, and humility in service to others. The efforts of DuPagePads and its partners exemplify this call, offering practical support to those in need and striving to meet the needs of the vulnerable with compassion and integrity.
