Elijah Spalbar Gergan, Principal of Moravian Mission School Leh and Chairman of Moravian Welfare Society, has dedicated his life to education and community service. Born in 1948, he grew up in Ladakh during the early years of India’s partition, spending his childhood with his grandmother and father. He recalls seeing caravans from Central Asia traveling to Ladakh from locations such as Kashgar and Yarkand. His family later moved to Kashmir as his father, working in the forest department, was transferred to Anantnag and then Bandipore.

In Bandipore, Gergan attended a small school in Khanabal before moving to a government school in Bandipore. However, due to language barriers, his parents decided to withdraw him from school. When his father was transferred to Baramullah, he was admitted to St. Joseph’s School, Baramullah, a 3- to 4-kilometer journey from their home. Eventually, the family moved to Srinagar, where he attended Tyndale Biscoe from 1961 to 1964. He later pursued higher education at Sri Pratap College, Srinagar, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from 1964 to 1968, followed by a Master of Science in Botany/Cytogenetics from Kashmir University, Srinagar, from 1968 to 1971.

Gergan’s journey in education continued with a Mountaineering Basic Course from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi in 1971. He later earned a Master of Divinity and Master in Theology from the Asian Center for Theological Studies and Mission (ACTS) in the Republic of Korea from 1975 to 1979. He also completed a Management Development Program at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad in 2009. Throughout his career, he has served in various capacities, including as a Board Member at the J&K Board of Secondary Education, a Coordination Committee Member at the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Council, and a Lecturer at Government Degree College and Jammu and Kashmir University.

Currently, Gergan holds several leadership roles, including President of CBSE Schools in Leh, President of the Ladakh Mountaineering and Adventure Club, and President of the Leh District Sports Council. His 23 years as Principal of Moravian Mission School Leh have been marked by a commitment to improving academic standards in a region that faced significant challenges. He has worked to transform the school into a more structured and effective educational institution, reflecting his deep dedication to the Moravian Church’s mission of education and community development.
