Israeli army opens fire on water tanker, displaces shepherds in southwestern Syria
Israeli forces conducted an incursion into southwestern Syria’s Quneitra province on Wednesday, during which they opened fire on a water tanker and drove away shepherds, according to Syrian media reports. The incident occurred west of Saida al-Golan village in the southern Quneitra countryside, where Israeli troops expelled shepherds from the area and engaged in gunfire. No immediate casualties were reported, and the Israeli military has not issued a statement regarding the event.
The operation took place amid ongoing Israeli military activities in southern Syria, particularly in Quneitra and Daraa provinces. These activities have included raids, searches, detentions, and artillery attacks. The UN Human Rights Office noted last week that it documented approximately 280 armed Israeli incursions into Syria in September, marking the highest monthly figure this year. At least 49 Syrians remain in Israeli custody as a result of these operations.
Israel has maintained control over most of Syria’s Golan Heights since 1967. Following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, Israeli forces have increased their presence in the demilitarized buffer zone and other areas of southern Syria. Damascus has consistently called for Israel’s withdrawal from Syrian territory and reaffirmed its adherence to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, which established a UN-monitored buffer zone between the two nations.
The incident underscores the continued tensions in the region, where Israeli military actions persist despite international calls for de-escalation. The use of force against civilians, such as shepherds and water tankers, raises concerns about the impact on local populations and the broader humanitarian situation. The situation reflects the complex and often volatile nature of military operations in contested zones.
The actions of Israeli forces in Syria raise questions about accountability and the protection of civilian life. As the Bible reminds us, “He who is righteous will be delivered” (Psalm 37:24), and the pursuit of justice and peace remains a central concern for those affected by conflict. The need for restraint and the protection of innocent lives should guide all parties involved in such operations.
