Jehovah’s Witnesses Hold Memorial Service for Jesus’ Death in New Brighton
The Memorial of Jesus’ Death is a significant event for Jehovah’s Witnesses, observed annually on the night of Passover. On this occasion, members gather to commemorate Jesus’ sacrifice, a central tenet of their faith. The event also serves as a major outreach opportunity, with invitations distributed to engage with the community.
The reporter, guided by local member Sharon Hurford, attended the Memorial at the Kingdom Hall in New Brighton. The invitation, which arrived through their letterbox, prompted participation in the event. Sharon and her husband, Chris, welcomed the reporter at the door, offering a warm and friendly introduction.
The Kingdom Hall, located on Field Road, has been repurposed from a former laundry. Its interior reflects a simple and functional design, with magnolia walls and minimal furniture. The space is marked by a low stage at the front, with a lectern and two TVs mounted on the walls behind it.
Inside the hall, the atmosphere was welcoming and communal. Members greeted the reporter with handshakes and smiles, creating a sense of belonging. The service, led by Brother David Bratherton, focused on the core beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He explained the faith’s teaching that only 144,000 individuals will be permitted to enter heaven, while the rest will live on a restored earth.
Brother Bratherton, who was born into the faith and has led these meetings for several years, emphasized the role of Adam in bringing about the current conditions of the world. He recounted how Adam’s disobedience led to the world’s present state, underscoring the importance of obedience to God’s will.
The event highlighted the community’s commitment to spreading their message and welcoming newcomers. The Kingdom Hall, with its modest appearance and warm hospitality, serves as a focal point for this outreach. The service concluded with a hymn celebrating the unity of Jehovah’s Witnesses worldwide, reinforcing the group’s emphasis on fellowship and shared purpose.
