Monroe Street United Methodist Church of Toledo, Ohio, is collaborating with a local charity to develop a tiny house community aimed at providing affordable housing for low-income families. The initiative, known as Bluff City Village, is spearheaded by the Monroe Street Neighborhood Center, a separate entity from the church. Construction of the first house is expected to begin as early as this summer, with plans to build approximately 20 homes at a total estimated cost of $1 million.

Each home will be around 400 square feet in size and will cost $400 per month in rent. Pastor Larry Clark, who serves as the project director for Bluff City Village, explained that the idea originated from discussions about redeveloping Bluff Street, which is adjacent to the church. The street, once home to houses, is now mostly empty lots. Clark noted that the project also aims to serve the community through their existing program, “The Bridge,” which provides food, clothing, and social services to those in need.

The project is currently in the fundraising phase, with the church controlling six lots on the block. The remaining space is owned by Toledo/Lucas County Land Bank, which has also committed to supporting the initiative. Clark highlighted that tiny houses are well-suited for urban lots and do not require the same building codes as traditional homes. This allows for more affordable construction, making the project more feasible.

The concept of tiny house communities is not unique to Monroe Street United Methodist Church. Faith Lutheran Church of Forest Lake, Minnesota, has also supported a similar initiative called “Sacred Settlement,” which focuses on providing housing for homeless veterans. This demonstrates a growing trend among churches to address housing needs through innovative and community-driven solutions.

The project envisions creating a supportive community where residents can enjoy outdoor spaces and engage in activities such as gardening. This aligns with the broader mission of many churches to serve the vulnerable and promote social justice. The initiative reflects a commitment to addressing homelessness and economic hardship through practical, faith-based action.
