Nacogdoches Church and Solid Foundation Program Launch Diversity Center for After-School Learning
Dr. Jeremiah Moss, senior pastor of Life Church in Nacogdoches, said the timing of the Solid Foundation program’s name change and funding approval aligns with what he described as “no such thing as coincidence according to God’s word in the Hebrew language.” The program, previously known as the Hispanic Center, has now been renamed the Diversity Center after receiving a $35,000 grant to expand its services.
John Canning, executive director of the Solid Foundation, emphasized the importance of the initiative, noting that about 44 percent of students in the Nacogdoches Independent School District are Hispanic. “A lot of them are struggling,” Canning said, highlighting the need for targeted support.
The program’s origins trace back to Canning’s efforts to secure a study space for Hispanic students. Initially, he negotiated with a Hispanic pastor who led a congregation in the same building now occupied by Life Church. When that congregation moved, Canning faced uncertainty about the program’s future.
The south side location, which appeals to many Hispanic residents, became a focal point for Canning. He approached Moss, who had recently studied the ministry of helps and was praying for ways to reduce barriers and empower people. Moss saw an opportunity to use the church’s underutilized spaces for after-school learning.
“We only use them on Wednesday morning and Sunday night,” Moss said, explaining that the rooms would now be available all week long for the program. The shift allows for greater accessibility and support for students in need.
The Diversity Center will continue to focus on Hispanic children but will also serve anyone who requires assistance. Solid Foundation, in partnership with Life Church, aims to reach 100 Hispanic students over the coming school year. Registration for the program will take place on Monday and Thursday evenings at the main office of Solid Foundation, located at 2220 East Main.
