Arthur Dennis grew up in Brooklyn, New York, with a desire to improve opportunities for urban students. While attending Temple University, he discovered a passion for teaching that would shape his future. During his freshman year, he volunteered with the Temple University Community Service Association (TUSCA), combining his love for education and community service by working with nonprofits in North Philadelphia.

One of his favorite volunteer experiences was tutoring students at the Bright Hope Baptist Church after-school program. When program organizers considered closing tutoring sessions due to low volunteer numbers, Dennis took initiative. Despite a demanding course load that included Honors classes, he managed the program, recruited more tutors, restructured the curriculum, and encouraged volunteerism across campus.

Initially, tutoring was limited to TUSCA members. Dennis expanded the opportunity to all Temple students, resulting in an overwhelming response. “We found more tutors for the program than we could take,” he said. “I was blown away by the number of students who were interested in volunteering. Our information sessions were so full that we had to turn a few people away.”

During the program, Dennis and his team of 30 volunteers provided homework assistance to students from kindergarten to eighth grade at nearby Dunbar and Duckrey elementary schools. Having a consistent tutor and a safe after-school environment is vital for young students, Dennis noted. “Sometimes all students need is to know that someone is consistently supporting their success,” he said. “I’ve watched a lot of young students come out of their shells and improve their grades because they participated in our tutoring program.”

He shared the story of a second-grade student who struggled with spelling. Initially reluctant to participate, the student gained confidence and skills through Dennis’s support, eventually earning a high grade in reading and spelling. This experience underscored the impact of consistent mentorship and encouragement.

Andrea D. Swan, community and neighborhood affairs director in Temple’s Office of Community Relations, praised Dennis’s dedication. “Arthur’s passion for education is surpassed by his willingness to serve,” she said. “I was pleased when I learned he pursued teaching as a profession. Arthur is going to make a big difference in the lives of his students in the years to come.”

Dennis’s commitment to serving others reflects the biblical call to care for the vulnerable, as seen in Matthew 25:35, where Jesus says, “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.” His work exemplifies the spirit of neighbor-love and practical mercy, offering hope and support to those in need.
