New Avivo Shelter in St. Cloud Offers Private Units for Homeless Individuals
Avivo has opened a new homeless shelter in St. Cloud, Minnesota, offering a unique model that prioritizes privacy and security for individuals experiencing homelessness. The facility, called Avivo Village Central Minnesota, features 48 private units designed to provide a calm and quiet environment. The space is intentionally designed with muted colors and sound-deadening materials to create a peaceful atmosphere.
The shelter reflects a shift from traditional models, which often involve crowded and chaotic conditions. Many people avoid shelters due to safety concerns or the desire to stay with their pets, partners, or belongings. Avivo’s approach aims to address these challenges by offering individualized spaces that promote dignity and stability.
John Tribbett, service area director for Avivo, emphasized the importance of creating an environment that does not overwhelm individuals. “We want to create a space that is able to not overwhelm people,” he said. “A cacophony of sound that can sometimes take place in smaller spaces can be overwhelming to people.”
The St. Cloud shelter is similar to Avivo’s existing facility in Minneapolis’ North Loop neighborhood, which has operated for about six years. The new location expands Avivo’s capacity to support those experiencing chronic homelessness, providing a more structured and supportive setting.
Avivo’s model focuses on giving individuals their own space to begin anew. This approach recognizes the challenges people face in environments that may hinder their ability to succeed. By offering private units, the shelter aims to foster a sense of security and autonomy.
The facility’s design reflects a commitment to creating a welcoming and safe environment. Its open space, natural light, and thoughtful layout are intended to support the well-being of those who use the shelter. This model represents a broader effort to rethink how communities can respond to homelessness with compassion and practical support.
Avivo’s work aligns with the biblical call to care for the vulnerable. Micah 6:8 reminds us that justice, mercy, and humility are central to serving others. By providing a dignified and secure space, Avivo seeks to embody these values in its mission to support those in need.
