The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America has released findings from a comprehensive survey of parish ministry leadership, offering insights into the state of parish life and the challenges faced by ministry leaders. Conducted in partnership with the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), the National Survey of Parish Ministry Leadership aimed to gather data from across the Archdiocese to inform strategic ministry planning.

The survey, which included input from clergy and parish council presidents, was designed through a collaborative process involving focus groups of ministry leaders at various levels. A total of 1,856 parish ministry leaders from every Metropolis participated, reflecting a broad representation of the Archdiocese’s diverse communities. Nearly three in five participants have served more than five years in their roles, highlighting the depth of experience among respondents.

One of the most encouraging findings from the survey is that 63% of parish ministry respondents characterized their parishes as growing over the past three years. This growth is seen as a positive sign for the vitality of the Archdiocese’s mission. However, the data also reveals underlying structural challenges that accompany this expansion.

Despite overall high levels of satisfaction—with 80% of respondents reporting they are satisfied or very satisfied with their parish—the survey suggests areas of strain beneath the surface. The research indicates a strong correlation between parish growth and high satisfaction in several key dimensions of parish life, including pastoral care, community engagement, and spiritual formation.

The findings have prompted a renewed focus on aligning ministry strategy with the needs of clergy and parish leaders. Archon Theo Nicolakis, Director of National Ministries and CIO, emphasized the importance of listening to and validating the experiences of ministry leaders as a foundation for future efforts. This approach is rooted in the mission of National Ministries to equip leaders for building up the body of Christ, as stated in Ephesians 4:12.

The survey results will inform the Archdiocese’s strategic direction, with an emphasis on training, equipping, and supporting ministry leaders to meet the evolving needs of parishes. By addressing both the opportunities and challenges identified, the Archdiocese aims to strengthen its ministry infrastructure and ensure sustainable growth in service to the faithful.
