“PBSO Identifies Woman’s Remains Found Near Boynton Beach as Regina Hess”

In a significant development, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) has positively identified the human remains found in 2023 near Boynton Beach as Regina Hess, born August 22, 1948. The discovery, which occurred in a wooded area off South Military Trail, was made by a nursery worker more than three years ago. The identification was achieved through a combination of forensic genetic genealogy, kinship testing, and the efforts of various experts, including staff and students from the Florida Gulf Coast University College of Arts and Sciences Human Identity and Trauma Analysis Program.

The remains, which appeared to have been at the location for an extended period, were found on May 11, 2023, in the 8000 block of South Military Trail. The Palm Beach County Office of the Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy, determining the cause of death as undetermined. Despite the challenges, PBSO’s Cold Case Unit, with the assistance of Bode Technology and Othram, developed a partial DNA profile and conducted forensic investigative genetic genealogy work, ultimately leading to the identification of Hess.

As the investigation continues, PBSO is seeking information from the public to uncover how Hess spent the years before her death and how she came to be at that location. In line with the biblical call to “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves” (Proverbs 31:8-9), the agency is urging anyone who knew Regina Hess to come forward. Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County is offering a reward of up to $3,000 for information that could lead to a breakthrough in the case.
