A Catholic priest in Oakville is accused of sexually assaulting a woman who was a volunteer at a church. The allegations have prompted a formal investigation by Halton Regional Police, who began their inquiry in early February.
On Tuesday, police announced they had charged 53-year-old Rev. Ranjan D’Sa with one count of sexual assault. The priest has been employed with St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church since 2016 and a member of the clergy since 2010.
Investigators are concerned there may be additional victims and are urging anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers anonymously. The Diocese of Hamilton was informed of the allegations via a social media post.
In a statement, the Diocese of Hamilton said it was committed to safeguarding all members of its community. Father D’Sa was immediately removed from St. Dominic Parish and is prohibited from all priestly ministry, pending further police investigations.
The case highlights the importance of accountability and transparency within religious institutions. It also underscores the need for vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals from harm.
As the investigation continues, the community is urged to remain informed and supportive. The pursuit of justice is a reflection of the value placed on the dignity and safety of every person.
