Prosecution-Police Team Concludes Probe Into Political-Religious Collusion, Seizes 26 Billion Won from Unification Church Leader
The prosecution and police team investigating potential collusion between political and religious entities has concluded its operations after 237 days of inquiry. Launched on January 6, the probe focused on allegations of influence-peddling, financial misconduct, and illicit political donations involving two prominent religious groups.
Among the key outcomes of the investigation was the arrest and indictment of Lee Man-hee, the founder of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, a nonmainstream religious organization. The team also seized 26 billion won ($18.9 million) in cash from the private safe of Han Hak-ja, a leader of the Unification Church. These actions followed findings of alleged financial impropriety and political interference.
The investigation uncovered claims that Shincheonji members were coerced into joining the People Power Party (PPP) between 2021 and 2024. During this period, at least 56,472 members reportedly joined the party, raising concerns about the church’s influence on electoral processes. Four Shincheonji officials, including Lee, were arrested and indicted, while 12 others were indicted without detention.
In relation to the Unification Church, 16 individuals, including Han Hak-ja, were indicted without detention. Summary orders were sought for six officials whose involvement in the alleged crimes was considered less severe. The probe suggests that the Unification Church may have illegally donated 189 million won to 132 politicians from 2019 to the present, aiming to strengthen political alliances and secure support for friendly candidates.
The investigation also highlighted the broader implications of such activities, including the potential misuse of religious influence for political gain. The probe underscores the need for transparency and accountability in both religious and political spheres.
A Seoul district court was set to address Han Hak-ja’s bribery case, which includes allegations of providing luxury gifts to the wife of former President Yoon Suk Yeol. This case further illustrates the complex interplay between religious institutions and political figures, emphasizing the importance of ethical conduct and legal oversight.
