Rev. William J. Shaw, a spiritual leader whose 70 years of pastoral service shaped generations of Philadelphians, died at age 92. His legacy is marked by unwavering dedication to his congregation and community.

For seven decades, Shaw served as pastor of White Rock Baptist Church in West Philadelphia, becoming one of the region’s longest-tenured and most influential ministers. The church, which has been in existence for 127 years, saw significant growth and transformation under his leadership.

Born in Marshall, Texas, Shaw accepted his calling early. Baptized at age 7, he delivered his first sermon at 11 and was ordained at 17 while already serving a small Texas congregation. He graduated summa cum laude from Bishop College at 19 and later earned degrees from Union Theological Seminary and Colgate Rochester Divinity School.

Shaw became pastor of White Rock in 1956, guiding the church through growth, rebuilding and deep community engagement. Known for his unwavering devotion, he rarely missed a Sunday and spent decades nurturing congregants through preaching, mentorship and pastoral care. His pioneering “Sheepfold Ministry” empowered lay leaders to comfort families, visit the sick and support one another.

Shaw served two terms as president of the National Baptist Convention USA Inc., and his leadership earned recognition at the highest levels of government. President Barack Obama appointed him to the President’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and later to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom.

In Philadelphia, Shaw contributed to civic life as executive director of the Opportunities Industrialization Center and through service on the boards of Junior Achievement of the Delaware Valley and Penn Medicine, where he chaired the trustee board of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Shaw was preceded in death by his wife, Camellia Shaw. He is survived by their son, Timothy; two granddaughters; and several great-grandchildren. His life and ministry reflect a commitment to service, community and faith that aligns with the biblical call to love one’s neighbor as oneself. As Micah 6:8 reminds us, to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God.
