Tafelsig Congregation Completes Construction of New Church in Cape Town
The Tafelsig congregation in Cape Town, South Africa, is set to host the 2026 Pentecost service, marking a significant milestone in the history of the New Apostolic Church. The congregation’s church building, a prominent landmark in the area, is notable for its size and the visibility of the Church’s emblem. The structure, with its large emblem cast into the domed roof, stands as a testament to the congregation’s growth and dedication.
In 1980, the first families moved into the Tafelsig neighborhood, drawn by the need for a place of worship. Initially, services, Sunday School, and choir practices were held in members’ homes, but the congregation quickly outgrew these spaces. Negotiations with local authorities allowed the Church to use school classrooms for services, and later, the congregation purchased two houses in the neighborhood, converting them into chapels. These chapels, dedicated in 1996 by Apostle Noel Barnes and Bishop John Kriel, accommodated a total of 500 members.
As the congregation continued to grow, the need for a larger facility became apparent. With the support of municipal authorities, the Church was granted permission to purchase land for a new church. The turning-of-the-sod ceremony for the construction took place on 18 January 1998, officiated by Apostle Cecil van der Merwe. The new church was dedicated on 20 June 1999 by District Apostle Noel Barnes, who based his service on 2 Corinthians 5:1, emphasizing the eternal nature of the spiritual home.
The design of the new church reflects the congregation’s commitment to accommodating its growing membership. Due to limited ground space, the architect opted for an upward expansion, constructing the building on columns to allow for parking underneath. The church features a double gallery and mezzanine floor, ensuring clear visibility of the altar from any seat. The altar platform is designed for ease of use by choirs and orchestras, and the church is equipped with a three-manual electric organ and a pipe section with seven registers, integrated into the building’s design.
