Tonga’s Free Wesleyan Church Concludes 10th Year of Reverend Dr ‘Ahio’s Presidency
Tonga is currently observing its annual festival season, which spans June and July, marked by several significant events. This period typically includes the annual conferences of the country’s major Protestant denominations, the King’s birthday celebrations, and the Heilala Festival. This year, however, the festival season has taken on a slightly different character due to ongoing political and social dynamics within the nation.
The festival season begins in June with the conferences of Tonga’s largest Protestant churches, including the Church of Tonga, Free Church of Tonga, Constitutional Church, and the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga (FWCT). These conferences traditionally draw thousands of visitors from overseas Tongan communities. The FWCT’s conference, held towards the end of the season, is the largest religious gathering of the year and features the election of the Church’s President and General Secretary.
Reverend Dr. ‘Ahio has served as the President of the FWCT for the past decade. His leadership has been marked by a strong commitment to the Church’s mission and values. This year marks the completion of his tenth year in office, and he may be considering retirement next year due to the Church’s policy of retiring clergy at the age of 70.
The festival season also coincides with the King’s birthday celebrations, which take place on 4 July. This year, the occasion is notable as the country grapples with political divisions between supporters of the Monarchical Constitutional rule and those backing Prime Minister ‘Akilisi Pohiva, who has proposed legislation to reduce the King’s power. Despite these divisions, there appears to be widespread support for the King across Tongan society, with many attributing this to the perceived failure of the current government in governance.
The Heilala Festival, held in July, complements the King’s birthday celebrations. Named after Tonga’s national flower, the festival serves as a cultural and social event that underscores the nation’s heritage and unity. As the festival season unfolds, it offers a moment for reflection on the nation’s past, present, and future, rooted in its rich traditions and shared values.
