Wisconsin DOJ Receives Over 100 Church-Related Abuse Claims Amid Statewide Investigation

The Wisconsin Department of Justice has received over 100 reports of abuse involving clergy and faith leaders since announcing a statewide investigation in April. These reports include allegations of abuse and concerns about how churches and religious organizations have responded to such allegations. The reports cover sex abuse allegations by clergy from various religious organizations, as well as some cases unrelated to any religious entity and claims involving multiple abusers within the state.

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul, a Democrat seeking reelection next year, initiated the investigation. Survivors, their families, and anyone with information about a religious organization’s response to abuse allegations have been encouraged to provide information to the justice department.

In a notable development, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee has refused to release documents requested by state investigators, arguing that the records are sealed and that Kaul lacks the authority to conduct such an investigation.
