Florida Grand Jury Finds $10M Misappropriated from Children’s Health Fund to Political Projects

In a significant finding, a Florida grand jury has determined that the administration of Governor Ron DeSantis misappropriated $10 million from a fund intended to support children’s health insurance. This money, originally part of a Medicaid-related settlement, was redirected to political projects through the Hope Florida Foundation, a faith-based organization.

The grand jury’s investigation revealed that the Hope Florida Foundation, established by Governor DeSantis’s wife, allocated half of the funds to the right-wing group Secure Florida’s Future and the other half to Save Our Society From Drugs. These funds were then used to oppose Amendment 3, a citizen-led initiative to legalize recreational marijuana in Florida.

Despite the grand jury’s findings, no criminal charges were recommended due to a lack of accountability; no individuals were found who could be held responsible for the decision to divert the funds to Hope Florida, nor did anyone recall who authorized the transfer.

The origins of the misappropriated funds trace back to a 2021 settlement in which Centene, a for-profit healthcare company, agreed to pay $1 billion for overcharging state Medicaid programs for prescription drugs. While many states resolved their claims, Florida delayed but eventually accepted $67 million from this settlement.
