Japhet, a Chinese-Australian with Cantonese heritage, explores his own culture’s history without seeking biblical connections. He finds five records that match biblical events. The first is a 5 BC Han Shu entry about a stationary star, later compared to the star of Bethlehem. The second involves a Chinese character for boat that some researchers suggest represents eight people, matching Noah’s flood survivors. The third is a 7th-century Chinese document describing Jesus in classical Chinese, found in Dunhuang. The fourth is the Shang Dynasty worship of Shangdi, a supreme deity, similar to Old Testament worship. The fifth is the Nestorian Stele, an official Chinese monument recording early Christian presence in China. Japhet acknowledges some claims are disputed, like the boat character interpretation. He concludes that these records, made without Christian influence, point to a shared story. “Chinese writing is among the oldest in the world.” These findings, he says, are not nothing.
