At the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught us how He wants us to pray. He said to go to a private place and pray like this: “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” (Matthew 6:9-13)

In other parts of Scripture, Paul talks about praying day and night without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). James emphasizes the importance of praying for one another’s healing (James 5:16). Paul also makes it clear that we shouldn’t make a spectacle of ourselves when we pray, nor should we babble on thinking that God will hear us because of our many words (Matthew 6:5-7).

I’ve noticed that Christians, Muslims, and Jews all have unique prayer practices. Jews pray three times a day with their heads covered, Muslims pray five times a day, fully prostrating themselves. These practices are beautiful expressions of their faith. But how often do we, as Christians, truly pray?

Psalm 119:164 mentions praising God seven times a day. If Jews can pray three times a day and Muslims five, why shouldn’t we aim for seven? I’ve started praying seven times a day ritualistically, in addition to my other prayers throughout the day—before meals, when I wake up, before bed, and whenever I get in the car.

I was inspired by a Muslim family I saw praying outside a busy Love’s truck stop. They weren’t showy but weren’t bashful either. Their dedication made me reflect on our own practices. How often do we just sit down and have a conversation with God? Have we been taught to ritualize our prayers?

In many Protestant churches, prayer can sometimes become a spectacle. But true prayer, as Jesus and the apostles taught, is personal and frequent. I challenge you to read the New Testament and see what it says about prayer. Let’s move beyond the once-a-week prayers led by the pastor and embrace a more personal, frequent practice. God sacrificed His Son for us; the least we can do is talk to Him regularly.
