Gowanlea Christadelphian Care Home in Bannockburn has announced its closure later this year, marking the end of a 35-year service to the local community. The 11-bed facility, located in a B-listed building on New Road, was named among Scotland’s top care homes in both 2024 and 2025 by the Sunday Times. The decision to close comes as the building is deemed unable to meet modern care standards and the evolving needs of residents.

The closure is attributed to the challenges posed by the historic structure, including smaller than ideal rooms, narrow corridors, and staircases. These limitations have made it increasingly difficult to provide the level of care required by residents. Home manager John Gill stated that the decision was not a reflection of the quality of care provided but rather a necessary step due to the physical constraints of the building.

In early March 2026, the Christadelphian Care Homes (CCH) trustees made the difficult decision to close the home. The closure is described as “resident-led,” with the facility remaining open until all residents have found new placements. While no specific date has been set, the operators anticipate the closure will occur within the next few months.

Residents and families are being supported in finding alternative care options within Bannockburn, with a small number of residents transitioning to other Christadelphian-run facilities in England and Wales. Staff are also being assisted in seeking new employment or retraining opportunities within the care sector.

Gowanlea has been a cornerstone of the Bannockburn community since its opening in 1991. Originally situated on the site of a former local GP’s residence and surgery, the home has served residents for over three decades. To commemorate its closure, a gathering was held where staff, residents, friends, relatives, and volunteers came together for an afternoon tea celebration. Piper Jamie McNaught led the event, sharing memories and reminiscing about the home’s history.

John Gill expressed gratitude for the support received from the community during the final weeks of the home’s operation. He emphasized the importance of the care provided and the impact it has had on residents, families, and staff. “Gowanlea has been a place of love, laughter, and faithful care,” he said. “We are grateful for every life that has been shaped and blessed within these walls — residents, families, and staff alike. To everyone who has played a part in its story: thank you. Visits remain very welcome.”
