Walthamstow Salvation Army hosts free coat event to assist families with winter clothing
Walthamstow Salvation Army is offering free coats to families and individuals as winter approaches. The event, held on Saturday, 7 November, will allow participants to pick up, swap, or donate warm coats for adults and children at no cost. The initiative takes place at the church located at 434 Forest Road, Walthamstow, from 9.30am to 1pm.
Donations of warm coats are being accepted at the Walthamstow Salvation Army location from next Monday, 26 October, until Thursday, 5 November. This coat exchange marks the fifth year the church has organized the event, which began in 2021 as the cost of living rose sharply. Last year, 500 coats were donated and distributed to those in need.
The Salvation Army’s Walthamstow branch leader, Major Julie Pell, emphasized the growing need for practical support as temperatures drop and living costs rise. “We see every day how many families and individuals in our community are struggling to afford the basics like a warm winter coat,” she said. The event aims to provide assistance while upholding the dignity of those who participate.
Major Pell also highlighted the church’s commitment to its mission priorities, noting that the coat exchange reflects the organization’s focus on Caring for Creation. By reusing clothing, the initiative helps reduce waste and ensures that quality garments remain in use for longer.
In addition to the coat exchange, Walthamstow Salvation Army hosts a Community Living Room every Friday. This space welcomes people of all ages to gather for tea or coffee and connect with others in the community. For more information, visitors can visit the church’s website.
The Salvation Army continues to support individuals and families in need through various programs and services. The organization encourages community members to contribute to these efforts and remain engaged in supporting those facing hardship.
