Church Pastor Arrested in Free Speech Incident, Police Investigating Public Order Offense

A Christian pastor, Steve Maile, senior pastor of Oasis City Church, was arrested while street preaching in Watford, Hertfordshire, on Saturday, April 18th. Maile was detained by police after insisting no offense had been committed during his gospel proclamation in the town centre.

Hertfordshire Constabulary confirmed the arrest, stating Maile was taken into custody on suspicion of assault and a Section 5 public order offense, which they allege was racially or religiously aggravated. He has been released on bail pending the completion of enquiries into the public order charge.

In a video recording of the incident, Maile denied the allegations, claiming he was “brutalised” and that the accusations against him are “totally false.” He expressed gratitude for supporters’ prayers and vowed to continue sharing the gospel despite the incident.

This event follows a commendation by the Met Police’s Assistant Commissioner for a police constable who encouraged street preaching in east London earlier this year. The incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding public evangelism and legal boundaries.
