Diepsloot pastor arrested after baby’s body found in shallow grave
A 36-year-old man alleged to be a pastor has been arrested in Diepsloot following the discovery of a four-month-old baby’s body in a shallow grave. The suspect was apprehended on October 10 after an extensive investigation involving detectives and Crime Intelligence units. Police confirmed he was found hiding in a backroom of a residence in the informal settlement, with injuries reported. His arrest adds to the three suspects in the case, including his two wives, who appeared before the Atteridgeville Magistrates’ Court on October 9. The pastor is expected to appear in court on October 12.
The incident is linked to events on October 7, when the woman allegedly accompanied her pastor and one of his wives to the Hennops River near the R511 for a ritual. Preliminary police information suggests the pastor’s wife remained with the baby while the pastor and the woman moved toward the river. The woman was allegedly raped and tied up. She managed to free herself and sought help at a nearby construction site, prompting a private security company to activate and alert police.
A multidisciplinary team, including Crime Scene Management, Search and Rescue, General Detectives, Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences detectives, as well as drone operators, was deployed to search for the missing infant and locate the pastor and his wife. The pastor’s 24-year-old wife was later found and questioned. She led investigators to the shallow grave where the baby’s body was discovered.
The case highlights the intersection of personal tragedy and systemic failure, underscoring the need for accountability and justice. Proverbs 31:8-9 calls for advocating for the vulnerable, reminding us that the cries of the oppressed should not go unheard. As the legal process unfolds, the focus remains on ensuring the truth is uncovered and that those responsible are held accountable.
The involvement of multiple agencies in the investigation reflects the complexity of such cases and the necessity of coordinated efforts to protect victims and seek justice. Ephesians 5:11 encourages believers to expose evil and pursue righteousness, a principle that aligns with the pursuit of justice in this matter. The community’s response and the actions of law enforcement will be critical in addressing the broader implications of this tragedy.
The arrest of the suspect marks a significant step in the investigation, but the journey toward justice is ongoing. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance, compassion, and the rule of law. As the legal proceedings continue, the community and authorities must remain committed to upholding the principles of mercy, accountability, and the protection of the vulnerable.
