First United Methodist Church Continues 120-Year Tradition of Community Service in Salt Lake City

For over 120 years, the First United Methodist Church in Salt Lake City has been a cornerstone of community service, embodying the principle of neighbor-love as highlighted in Matthew 25:35. Established in 1870, the church began with a modest congregation of 40 members and has since grown significantly, reflecting its enduring commitment to both spiritual and social outreach.

In its early years, the church focused on education and social work, aligning with its mission to serve the community. The congregation initially gathered in a building on 300 South between Main Street and State Street, before relocating to a new site at the corner of 200 South and 200 East, where the building was dedicated on May 27, 1906. This site became a spiritual home for many, including Berta Alva Hess Penney, the first wife of J.C. Penney, who attended faithfully with her family.

The church’s history is marked by acts of generosity and remembrance. After Berta’s untimely death following a tonsillectomy in 1910, J.C. Penney donated funds to clear the building’s debt and commissioned a plaque in her honor, ensuring her legacy continued within the church community.

Over the years, the church’s main sanctuary has seen several renovations. Notably, the historic pipe organ, installed in 1906, was restored to its original splendor in 2008 after being painted over during previous renovations. This restoration effort was a testament to the church’s dedication to preserving its heritage, as noted by Mike Green, the church’s historian and events coordinator.

Today, the First United Methodist Church continues its mission of service, offering aid to the unhoused and collaborating with local faith groups. This ongoing commitment to community support exemplifies the church’s adherence to Galatians 6:10, “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” Through its actions, the church remains a beacon of hope and service in Salt Lake City.
