Former Vineyard UK Pastor Alan Scott Alleged Spiritual Abuse of Staff and Congregants
Former Vineyard Pastor Alan Scott fostered a culture of spiritual abuse at Causeway Coast Vineyard (CCV) during his tenure from 1999 to 2017, according to a comprehensive investigative report commissioned by Vineyard Churches UK and Ireland (VCUKI) and CCV. The report, conducted by Trusted HR, confirmed earlier findings of abuse and prompted an apology from VCUKI and CCV. The report detailed themes of narcissism, a focus on numbers, public shaming, manipulation, and safeguarding deficiencies under Scott’s leadership.
The findings revealed that Scott often claimed to know people’s sins by simply looking at them and asserted he could discern if individuals were discussing him in their homes. He also framed healing stories as a competitive endeavor, creating an environment where spiritual well-being was measured by performance rather than genuine care. The report highlighted that 76 percent of respondents described a sense of rejection, with some individuals reportedly being cut off when they admitted to personal struggles, such as addiction.
The investigation included testimonies from 37 people, encompassing staff and congregants during Scott’s leadership and those under the subsequent pastorate of Neil and Janet Young, Scott’s sister-in-law. The report noted that some abusive dynamics persisted even after the Youngs took over in 2017. Neil Young, who was interviewed for the report, defended Scott throughout the process. The Youngs resigned last Sunday due to a disagreement over the investigation.
The report also documented concerns from staff and congregants at Scott’s previous pastorate at Vineyard Anaheim, which separated from Vineyard U.S.A. in 2022 and became Dwelling Place. These concerns were not included in the current investigation, which focused on CCV and VCUKI.
In a joint statement, CCV and VCUKI expressed regret and sorrow for the harm caused, acknowledging the wrong and hurtful conduct that occurred. Donna Finney, a former CCV employee involved in the UK investigation, welcomed the report as validating the truth being brought to light. The findings underscore the need for accountability and care within church leadership, reflecting the biblical call to justice, mercy, and humble service as outlined in Micah 6:8.
