LGBTQ Students, Alumni, and Allies Rally at Point Loma Nazarene University for Equal Representation
Students and alumni from Point Loma Nazarene University gathered in protest last week, advocating for greater inclusion and protection of LGBTQ individuals within the institution. The rally, held on the national Day of Silence organized by the Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network, highlighted concerns about harassment and discrimination faced by LGBTQ students and faculty.
Point Loma Nazarene University, a private Christian institution, has a strong biblical foundation that some argue does not fully align with the needs of the LGBTQ community. Alumni and supporters have formed a coalition to address these issues, emphasizing the importance of a welcoming environment for all students.
Lauren Cazares, an alumna of the university, founded the coalition to support the growing LGBTQ community on campus. She expressed pride in her education at PLNU but voiced concern over recent developments, stating, “We are proud alumni but we are not proud of what’s happening on campus right now.”
The rally also supported two faculty members who were dismissed earlier this spring. Melissa Tucker, an adjunct professor, was let go in February, with her believing the decision was linked to her advocacy for the LGBTQ community. Dr. Mark Maddix, the dean of the School of Theology and Christian Ministry, was later fired after publicly disagreeing with Tucker’s dismissal.
Openly gay students continue to attend classes at both the undergraduate campus on Point Loma and the graduate school in Mission Valley. Sydney McFadden and Jessica Saavedra-White, a couple set to graduate in April, shared their experiences. Saavedra-White expressed determination to stand with her partner, saying, “I told Sydney, even if it’s just me and her, I would stand with her.”
The event underscored the ongoing tension between the university’s religious mission and the need for inclusive practices. As the debate continues, the community remains divided on how to balance faith-based principles with the rights and well-being of all individuals.
