The Mennonite community in Belize lives in remote, rural areas, maintaining a way of life that includes the use of horse-drawn carts and traditional lighting. Photographer Jake Michaels captured images of this community, highlighting their isolated existence and the use of straw hats and horse-drawn transportation. Belize, located in Central America, is home to approximately 12,000 Mennonites, a group of Christians who reside in closed communities and generally avoid modern technology, though some have access to electricity.

The Mennonite group originated in Europe in the sixteenth century and began migrating globally in search of isolated agricultural lands, often fleeing persecution or seeking to avoid integration into broader society. In Belize, the Mennonite community arrived in the late 1950s when over 3,000 Canadians, who were Mennonites from Mexico, emigrated under an agreement with the Belize government. This agreement provided them with land, religious freedom, and exemption from certain taxes.

In Belize, the Mennonite community plays a significant role in the local poultry and dairy markets, despite comprising less than 4% of the population. The community’s economic activities are largely centered around commercial farming, which is their primary profession. However, the community faces challenges, including a decline in literacy rates, with only 5% of its members completing formal secondary education.

The Mennonite way of life reflects a commitment to simplicity and self-sufficiency, rooted in their religious beliefs and historical experiences. Their isolation and traditional practices are not merely cultural choices but are deeply tied to their faith and the values they have upheld for generations. This lifestyle, while distinct from the broader society, continues to shape their interactions and contributions within the region.
