Netanyahu Remains Caretaker as EU Sanctions Talk on Israel Stalls Pending New Government
EU sanctions talks on Israel are on hold until a new Israeli government is formed, according to the report published by EUobserver. The report says experts warn that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could attack Iran within a “matter of days” in order to improve his chances of retaining power.
Netanyahu will remain in a caretaker role for several weeks or months while coalition talks continue. The talks follow inconclusive elections held on Tuesday, 27 October. His rightwing bloc won the most seats, 53 of the 120 in the Knesset, but fell short of a majority.
The report states that the elections took place amid ongoing Israeli military action in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon. It says this activity was expected to continue or intensify in the post-election power struggle. Restraint in a period of heightened tension matters for civilians in the path of conflict, a call to peacemaking (Matthew 5:9).
According to the report, Netanyahu needs eight defector members of parliament to remain in power. It says he has courted them by playing on security fears.
