State Files Charges in Church Theft, Fraud Case Against Pastor’s Former Wife

State prosecutors have formally charged Nancy Ellen Mitchell, a former worship ministry leader at Gulf to Lake Baptist Church, with grand theft and organized fraud, alleging she stole over $180,000 from the church between 2021 and 2024 (Proverbs 31:8-9).

The Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office filed an information accusing Mitchell of stealing more than $100,000 and engaging in organized fraud, both classified as first-degree felonies. Prosecutors claim she used church funds for personal expenses, including items like cosmetics and cat food (Ephesians 5:11).

A church audit in early 2025 uncovered irregularities, leading to an investigation by the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives report Mitchell admitted to using church accounts for personal purchases, though she claimed to reimburse the church when questioned.

Mitchell, who recently resumed her maiden name after divorcing former pastor Lloyd Bertine, was arrested in July after a five-and-a-half month investigation. She has entered a not guilty plea and is represented by attorney Alexei Lizanich.

Court records indicate Mitchell has waived her right to a speedy trial and will appear at a pretrial conference. She remains free on bond while the case progresses.
