Church Offers Resources to Homeless Amid Uncertain Timeline for Nashville Downtown Library Repairs
McKendree United Methodist Church has become a vital resource for the homeless community in Nashville as the downtown library remains closed following a fire and collapse three months ago. The church has seen a significant increase in visitors, with some meals now serving up to 150 people. This surge in demand has prompted the church to seek additional volunteers and donations to ensure no one is turned away.
Restoration Pointe Executive Director Bobby Lee Smith emphasized the importance of providing these services, noting that the church has become a safe place for many. The church’s outreach has expanded, with more individuals showing up to volunteer and contribute to the community. Justice Odem, who once relied on the library for support, shared how the church has continued to assist her after her connection with the library.
Odem was helped by the church in securing employment, finding housing, and receiving free business attire. She described the library as a “safe haven” and a “headquarters” for the homeless, highlighting its critical role in her life. The church’s clothes closet now sees long lines of people seeking new items each week, often before meals are served.
Smith mentioned the church is striving to offer additional resources to the community until the library reopens. However, there is currently no set timeline for the completion of the restoration work. Despite the downtown branch’s closure, Nashville Public Library continues to operate its 20 other locations, offering hundreds of free programs.
Andrea Fanta, a spokesperson for the Nashville Public Library, noted that staff at all locations are trained to connect individuals with supportive services. The library has partnered with Metro Homeless Services to provide office hours at the North branch, which is less than two miles from the downtown location. This collaboration ensures that those in need can access essential resources and support systems.
