Thousands Rally in Iraq Against US-Israeli Regional Aggression
Tens of thousands of supporters of Iraq’s Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr rallied in Baghdad and other cities on Saturday, protesting against what they described as the US-Israeli war on Iran. Demonstrators gathered in Tahrir Square, waving Iraqi flags and chanting slogans such as “No, no to Israel” and “No, no to America.” The protest reflects growing regional concern over the escalating conflict, with Iraq caught in the crossfire of broader tensions.
Iraq has been unwillingly drawn into the regional conflict, experiencing attacks that target both US interests and pro-Iranian groups within its territory. The demonstrations, which included some women, underscore the widespread opposition to what participants called a “senseless war.” Dhirgham Samir, a demonstrator in his 40s, stated that the aggression by America and Israel is not a military war but one driven by injustice and arrogance.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in thousands of casualties across the region since its inception. Muqtada al-Sadr called for peaceful demonstrations to condemn what he described as “Zionist-American aggression” and to promote peace in the region. His followers have consistently shown their ability to mobilize large crowds, reflecting his significant influence within Iraq’s Shia community.
Protesters gathered beneath Baghdad’s Freedom Monument, which commemorates Iraq’s independence declaration, to denounce what they view as US and Israeli interference in regional affairs. Muslim leader Ali al-Fartousi told AFP that such actions violate the rights of all peoples in the region and the world. He called for global unity to confront what he described as “Zionist-American arrogance.”
Muqtada al-Sadr commands a loyal following of millions within Iraq’s Shia majority and has demonstrated his ability to mobilize large crowds. His influence extends into Iraqi ministries and official institutions through his representatives, despite his opposition to various governments over the years. The protests highlight the complex interplay of regional alliances and the deepening impact of the conflict on civilian populations.
