Murcia, Spain, City Council recognizes Quakers’ Civil War aid to refugee children
The plenary session of the Murcia City Council unanimously recognized the role of the Quakers during the Spanish Civil War in support of refugee children.
The recognition was proposed in a motion submitted by Begoña García of the PSOE. At the close of the motion, the whole plenary gave a closed ovation to those honored.
José Castaño and Elisa Smilg, who collaborated in this work, were present at the plenary session. Their presence marked the council’s acknowledgment of the people involved in the effort (Matthew 25:35).
The council described the Quakers’ effort as a great humanitarian action in the city. According to the source, it assisted 20,000 war refugees from different parts of Spain.
