Tanzanian Bishop Emphasizes Cultivating Holiness Beyond Worship Spaces in Parish Consecration
Bishop Michael George Msonganzila of Tanzania’s Catholic Diocese of Musoma emphasized the importance of living out holiness beyond the walls of consecrated worship spaces. During the consecration of St. Pope Paul VI Bweri Nyabange Catholic Parish on May 29, he urged the faithful to embody the holiness they experience in church through their daily lives. He warned that the sanctity of such places would be meaningless if not reflected in the lives of those who gather there.
In his homily, Bishop Msonganzila reminded the congregation that they have already been anointed with holy chrism through Baptism, Confirmation, Ordination, and Episcopacy. He encouraged them to “give off the fragrance of holy chrism,” ensuring that their character, words, and relationships reflect their own consecration. The bishop emphasized that the Church is a living entity, continually called to unite with Christ, the living cornerstone.
The newly consecrated parish, placed under the patronage of St. Pope Paul VI, was described as being “set apart in a unique and holy way for the celebration of the sacred mysteries of the Church.” Bishop Msonganzila highlighted the significance of this choice, noting that St. Pope Paul VI was the first Pope to visit Africa and played a pivotal role in the continent’s ecclesiastical and spiritual development.
The decision to honor St. Pope Paul VI was also influenced by his historic visit to Uganda in 1964, where he proclaimed the Uganda Martyrs as saints. Bishop Msonganzila pointed to the Pope’s leadership in the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) in 1969, which underscored the importance of missionary spirit and outreach.
The bishop urged the parish to emulate the missionary spirit of St. Pope Paul VI, emphasizing that personal holiness alone is insufficient. He called for a collective effort to bring holiness to others in need, reflecting the broader mission of the Church. This message aligns with the biblical call to live out one’s faith in action, as seen in Micah 6:8, which reminds believers to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.
Bishop Msonganzila, who has led the Musoma Diocese since 2008, stressed the importance of unity and mission within the Church. His words serve as a reminder that the sanctity of worship spaces is not confined to their physical boundaries but extends to the lives of those who are called to live out their faith. This vision of holiness, rooted in Christ, continues to inspire the faithful to embody the values of love, justice, and service.
