Syriac Catholic Patriarch Visits Southeastern Turkey for First Time in 30 Years, Celebrates First Communion at Historic Cathedral
Syriac Catholic Patriarch Ignatius Joseph III Younan made a historic visit to southeastern Turkey, marking his first trip to the region in nearly 30 years. The visit included stops in Istanbul and the Tur Abdin area, where he met with Church leaders, community members, and local officials. A key moment was the celebration of the First Communion of eight children at the Virgin Mary Cathedral in Merde (Mardin), a ceremony not held at the site in over three decades.
The Patriarch described his visit as a pilgrimage, emphasizing spiritual renewal and the importance of preserving Syriac Christian heritage. During his time in Istanbul, he inspected religious and administrative centers, celebrated a Holy Cross service, and visited former patriarchal vicar Yusuf Sağ, offering prayers for the retired cleric.
In Merde, Patriarch Younan met with provincial Governor Tuncay Akkoyun, discussing the region’s historical heritage and religious coexistence. The governor highlighted the Suroyo heritage as an essential part of Merde’s cultural identity. The delegation also visited the historic Syriac Catholic church and foundation building, engaging with local community members.
A central event of the visit was the Patriarch’s pilgrimage to Mor Deyrulzafaran Monastery, a significant site for Syriac Orthodox Christianity. Syriac Orthodox Metropolitan Archbishop Saliba Özmen and clergy welcomed the Patriarch with traditional hymns and presented him with episcopal vestments, a cross, and a staff. Together, they celebrated the Marian liturgy, Teshmeşto, and prayed for peace and stability in the Middle East and globally.
The visit underscored the enduring presence of the Syriac Catholic community in Tur Abdin, a region with deep Syriac Christian roots. The Patriarch’s actions reflect a commitment to maintaining spiritual and cultural ties, while also seeking interfaith dialogue and peace.
