Augusta, Maine, campout collects food donations for Salvation Army ahead of Thanksgiving
A week-long campout in Augusta, Maine, is helping the Salvation Army prepare for increased need during the Thanksgiving season.
Townsquare Media’s 92 Moose and B-98.5 are hosting the eighth annual Camp Out Hunger at the Sam’s Club parking lot on Marketplace Drive in Augusta.
Organizers say the drive has seen record-breaking turnout and donations of all sizes from local residents and companies, despite a financially difficult year for families. They attribute the response to the generosity of Central Mainers.
Capt. Keith Davis, commanding officer of the Salvation Army Capitol Region, said every donation adds to the total, whatever its size. “If you have a company that comes and donates 800 cans of corn, which did happen earlier this week, or you have 800 people coming and donating one can, it’s the same amount,” Davis said. “And so everybody can come together and make a big difference.” Giving to neighbors in this way reflects the spirit of sharing what one has (Hebrews 13:16).
All donations will stay in Central Maine and go to the Salvation Army’s food pantry in Augusta.
The Salvation Army’s requested items are listed on an online food tracker, titled Camp Out Hunger — Food Drive Tracker.
