Australian Catholic Weekly Mass Attendance Falls From 11.8% to 8.2%, 2016–2021 Figures Show
The proportion of Australia’s Catholics attending weekly Mass fell from 11.8% to 8.2% between 2016 and 2021, according to figures released this week.
The Australian Catholic Mass Attendance Report 2021 found that the number of people attending Mass fell from 623,400 to 417,350 over the same period. The source describes the overall decline as about a third of Massgoers.
Counting who gathers for worship is one way the Church tracks its life in a given country, and the report’s figures show how many people were attending in each year. Keeping track of who is present is also a way of noticing whom the faith is being passed on to (Psalm 78:4).
