Bishop Clayton H. Privett, Leader of Church of God, Dies at 86
Bishop Clayton H. Privett, a devoted servant of the Church of God, passed away on March 30, 2026, after a life of ministry and service. He was born on April 22, 1939, in Daisy, Tennessee, and was the sixth child of Thomas Henry and Della Mae Privett. His life was marked by a deep commitment to his faith, family, and country, which he lived out through decades of service in the Church of God.
Clayton met his wife, Charlotte Underwood Privett, in the 8th grade, and their love story began with a promise he made to marry her. They married in 1959, and together they served in ministry for over 46 years. Charlotte passed away in 2019 after a five-year battle with Lewy Body Dementia, during which Clayton was a steadfast caregiver. Their marriage, spanning six decades, was a testament to their shared faith and devotion.
Throughout his life, Clayton was known for his love of people and his ability to connect with others. He enjoyed golf and often used the game as an opportunity to share his faith. His storytelling skills brought joy to those around him, and his many adventures were a source of laughter and inspiration. He remained close to his family, cherishing the time spent with his parents, siblings, and extended family during gatherings.
Clayton’s ministry began in 1969 when he and Charlotte pastored the Maple Hollow Church of God, which he later renamed the Sequoyah Church of God. He went on to serve as senior pastor at several churches across the United States, including the East Lake Church of God in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the Cathedral of the Valley in Glendale, Arizona, and others in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Georgia. His ministry was characterized by a dedication to spreading the Gospel and winning souls for the kingdom of God.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte, his infant son Jeffery Dwight Privett, and several siblings. Survivors include his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who continue to carry forward his legacy of faith and service. His life and ministry reflect the call to love God and neighbor, as described in Micah 6:8, and his impact will be felt in the lives of those he touched.
