California Church Supports Neighbors Amid Wildfire Losses
The pain is still raw for many in the Los Angeles area, nearly a month after wildfires destroyed thousands of homes and claimed at least 29 lives. Christians in the region are navigating the aftermath, balancing personal loss with a commitment to serve others. At the Lincoln Avenue Church of Christ in Pasadena, members continue to grieve while reaching out to those in need.
Keith Gibbs, a retired U.S. Marine Corps staff sergeant, narrowly escaped the flames with his wife, Jenifer, and three grandchildren. The family fled their home in Altadena just hours before the inferno consumed their neighborhood. “We got out by the grace of God,” Gibbs said, recalling the chaos of the night. “Ashes were all over the car. I didn’t think we were going to make it.”
The destruction in Altadena has left many homes, businesses, and churches unrecognizable. Gibbs described the scene as if a bomb had exploded, emphasizing the deep emotional toll. “There’s no words that can heal the pain that I feel,” he said, struggling to control his emotions. “This hurts to the core. But I’m not the only one going through this.”
For others, the trauma is compounded by personal loss. One Lincoln Avenue Church member, who spoke only by her first name, escaped with her husband and daughter after being warned by sheriff’s deputies. “From what I’m understanding, this could be two to two-and-a-half years,” she said of the rebuilding process. “So right now, we’re OK. … But in the future, I guess it just depends on how things fall in place.”
The church, located near the 210 Freeway, has become a hub of support for those affected by the fires. Members are working together to provide food, shelter, and emotional care to neighbors in need. Despite their own losses, many are focused on helping others, reflecting a spirit of mercy and community.
While the road to recovery is long, the church’s members are relying on faith and each other. As they rebuild their lives, they are also striving to restore hope in their community. Their actions echo the biblical call to care for the vulnerable and to serve with humility and love.
