Christian Leaders in Syria Call for National Reconciliation and Lifting of Sanctions
Christian leaders in Syria have issued a statement expressing a message of ‘love and hope’ amid the country’s ongoing transformation. Following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad’s government in December, Syria is now under the control of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The statement, signed by three major Syrian church leaders, calls for national reconciliation, the lifting of international sanctions, and the participation of Christians in shaping the new constitution.
The statement is signed by John X, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East; Mor Ignatios Aphrem II, Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, and Supreme Head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church; and Youssef I Absi, Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarch of Antioch and All the East. They emphasize the importance of humility, courage, and determination in building a future for Syria.
The leaders outline four key areas of focus: national reconciliation and dialogue, the lifting of international sanctions, participation in drafting a new constitution, and hope for a bright future. They advocate for a comprehensive national dialogue that unites all segments of society, fosters trust, and addresses the roots of conflict.
To promote reconciliation, they propose local dialogue workshops aimed at addressing social challenges, achieving genuine reconciliation, and enabling communities to work toward shared recovery. They also stress the need to revive the spirit of coexistence by countering prejudice, hate speech, and discrimination.
The statement highlights the importance of a culture of dialogue and openness, urging all Syrians to avoid disputes and populism. It reflects a commitment to building a nation based on common values such as citizenship, dignity, freedom, and coexistence.
