Reverend Richard Glenn Elgin died on Sunday, June 18, 2023, at the age of 91, according to his obituary published by Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was the son of the late Ora Roberson Elgin and Buren Alexander Elgin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo Ann Phillips Elgin, and by several siblings and a close friend. He is survived by a daughter, a son, a grandson, his mother, and two sisters, along with other relatives and friends.

Elgin was an ordained minister with the Church of the Brethren. He had been a member of the Lynchburg Church of the Brethren since 1960, and the obituary says he served many congregations during his ministry. One of them was the Smith River Church of the Brethren, where his father had also served for many years.

Before entering full-time ministry, Elgin worked in marketing and communications at General Electric and retired after 29 years with the company. The obituary also describes his personal interests, including tennis, fishing, golf, pool, and music. It says he played the guitar and mandolin and sang songs he admired as well as some he had written himself.

The obituary says those who knew Elgin often described him as “so nice,” and it closes with a hope that his example and faith will be remembered by those who read it. A funeral service is scheduled for Friday, June 23, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, Virginia, with his nephew, Reverend Richard A. Rorrer, officiating. The family has asked that memorials be made to the Lynchburg Church of the Brethren, the Smith River Church of the Brethren, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
